Christian Vogt

Hey.... We're not on speaking terms today.. sooooo. Just read my blog. Christian Vogt. Interesting guy. I literally see nothing about him on google (well. not much) Which means he must be someone you know or someone you like a lot! I'm not super keen on some of his work? The daughter one kinda disgusted me a little? If I knew more about his artwork I might get it but I do quite like his almost surrealist images. Especially the skinpage ones and how he sets them up in exhibits.  This image in particular is breathtaking and honestly, I cant say that I quite understand how he can be so almost vulgar? yet at the same time capture amazingly beautiful landscapes. The high contrast he uses and perfect exposure makes it almost feel like the wind is rustling through my ears, I would one day like to scale a mountain like this. This piece is nonsensical but I absolutely LOVE it. There's something to read into, or read from yourself depending on how you interpret it, to me it almost f...

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hey Teach, I was really stuck between Hiroshi Sugimoto and Gregory Crewdson, their photos are both gorgeous in separate ways, Hiroshi being very absurd, dark, and surreal. Whereas Gregory creates a story before your eyes, with vivid colors, interesting poses, and very wide images. I was enticed by both, but at the end of the day I have to admit that Hiroshi and his notes left me much more intrigued. Every one of his artworks has a personal blurb from him, longer or shorter depending. The way he writes adds much to pieces, some may say that it means his pieces can't speak for him but I'd say just like the candles he took photos of he illuminates the thoughts behind the camera, and sometimes help do what photo can't. My favorite pieces were the wax statues, the tall figure, and his sea of buddhas. The last one called to me more than the others, something about the way he spoke of them and the exact way he photographed them is just thought provoking. Before I read the blurb h...

Richard Avendon

Hey Teach, been a bit since my first semester here! I feel weird looking back at all those blogs. Today I decided that I'd finish up my blog, and just like I did when you showed us these photo's I feel drawn toward Richard Avedon, but Irving Penn is definitely a close second. Mr Avedon's style just feels.. familiar? I feel like I can see the sort of sarcastic disappointment in his art? Of course that could just be me inserting my feelings into the piece, but regardless its what I see. This first photo was an immediate draw. The clowns, the motion, the contrast, the almost newspaper cut makeup/ face, the name and the simplicity are all amazing, and I find myself in love with it. I also feel like the way he can draw out certain feelings with his images and personalities is amazing. You can see it with the clowns and with the governor. His artistry conveys motion, its stark and blunt, its attractive or disgusting. He conveys what there is and takes it even further, drawi...
