Richard Avendon


    Hey Teach, been a bit since my first semester here! I feel weird looking back at all those blogs. Today I decided that I'd finish up my blog, and just like I did when you showed us these photo's I feel drawn toward Richard Avedon, but Irving Penn is definitely a close second. Mr Avedon's style just feels.. familiar? I feel like I can see the sort of sarcastic disappointment in his art? Of course that could just be me inserting my feelings into the piece, but regardless its what I see. This first photo was an immediate draw. The clowns, the motion, the contrast, the almost newspaper cut makeup/ face, the name and the simplicity are all amazing, and I find myself in love with it. I also feel like the way he can draw out certain feelings with his images and personalities is amazing. You can see it with the clowns and with the governor. His artistry conveys motion, its stark and blunt, its attractive or disgusting. He conveys what there is and takes it even further, drawing out the shadows and seduction with the snake and fully exposing the stark whites and blacks with the ants showing exactly what he wants. He also was a fashion photographer which I love. It's a line of work I've always dreamed of. Overall I don't think that Richard is an amazing portraiture inspiration but in general he seems absolutely inspiring to my personal tastes and ideas.

I think Richard's most important quality would have to be his conveying of motion, or lack thereof, his photo's seem almost be moving.

 Hello ANDREAS! I hath decided upon the man known as chip simons, because his work inspired the first of my color series! he seems pretty cool. i like the way he uses light and color, wow… almost as if that’s why you picked him. Anyways. it was a struggle to find his series as he doesn’t seem to have a website. however I did find one. That was his series on surrealism. I have to say, his use of scale in images is very masterful. And the perspectives are great too, it seems like he specifically enjoys using the fisheye lens/ distorting the scale of objects and people. Alana Dee Haynes

 Hey Teach,  Let’s talk about somebody new for my final, someone interesting. Haynes is someone who does stuff like me, mixed media, dabbles in different types of art, but specifically her thread to thread photography exhibition stood out to me. Why? It’s new, it’s not what I do but inspiring, and it’s creative. It’s similar enough that it gives me thoughts and ideas but also reminds me of sigmar polke and my other inspirations. I’m quite interested in seeing more like this so I’m going to look if she has more. Work: Lo and Behold, I found more!!! They are really just genius and I enjoy them a lot. They seem like they are about self perception or dissociation, like the way people always seem themselves differently or outside of what you may think they are or different than what they assume a human is. Vivian Maier

 Hey Teach.  Found an artist I thought was cool to talk about!!! Vivian Maier seems pretty interesting. I like how she photographs people, it’s cinematic and emotional. I think I could best describe it as raw, or as pure? It feels like i’m not seeing a photo but a window of the world? Some of her stylistic choices also feel somewhat dramatic in other photos, and if you ever watched the series of unfortunate events tv version I think some remind me of that style. I randomly found her searching for an artist but I decided to choose her because of the style.  What I really like about her work too is how she makes silly things feel like the person pursuing them is serious, the dissonance in that is very series of unfortunate events, and incredibly funny to me. I love art that can laugh about itself while still staying technical, honest, and true.  I think I can take more of that energy from her, as I often find sighing my work, especially in class, that I shield or cring...
