Alec Soth
Hey Teach,
I WAS WRONG!!! I thought we had the last blog, and our artist. Well.. uhhh.. awkward.
So, Alec Soth, I think I remember you talking about him. I don't remember exactly, what he did so lets go look!
I gave a quick look to what Alec Soth produces, and it looks very contemporary and made with meaning behind the art beyond what it is. To be specific his photos seem to be made to speak a message, and I want to look further at his art to confirm or to think about what that might be. As it stands the quick glance made me think it might be about the brokenness of the world currently.
I was wrong! (As it stands) I looked at two of his projects, and it seems more so a meta type of art. Im figuring based on how he looks that he may be a disillusioned or theoretical artist who has worked for awhile and has become bored of normal works. At some level I also do see a bit of an abstract, surreal, and worldview undertone. His photos show almost the perspective of people if that makes sense? The connection I get between all his photos is art as a trade or as a lifestyle. He shows other creative and unique people, art in progress, sets from the outside like Anne Leibovitz. Its very meta but also personal and real in that way. He also does occasionally show some beautiful portrait photography that I truly enjoy.
As I look even more at his work I absolutely do see even more this meta, real perspective of art and mind. This may not be what he meant but I feel that. It feels like someone trying to explore their own mind, and their own perspective through other people, abstract concepts, perspective, meta analysis, and surreal photos. I like it a lot, the disorientation in his photos fits for me because people are disoriented, have many versions of themselves, change their minds, see things in many ways. In that sense his art is not about a specific topic because neither is life.
I find some of his works very interesting and inspiring for my photos, because it shows how interesting you can make photos without any editing at all. My photos specifically are a lot more obviously edited, and so it may not be incredibly useful to me, but I do plan to shoot some specific areas, and the way he controls surroundings, frames things is useful for that, he's able to add a mood into his photos that feels hard to explain and I think I could take something from that.
I don't have honestly much more to say right now, other than that I too find myself disorganized, spreading my creativity and art across many sections, and that may be why I see what I see here right now. I hope that I don't stretch myself too thin.
