Ernst Haas and His Portraits

Hey Teach, Finn is still here (I did this right after the last one.) And well. You wanted us to research into a specific artist. I wasn't feeling super original today so I decided to blindly pick Ernst Haas. To start off I just googled the man and was greeted by an array of what I thought were paintings, but I quickly realized were the work of a master photographer. (That image is at the bottom). But even faster I found his photo's of life, and those were and still are my favorite. They capture exactly what I currently see and want photography to be, a situation compressed into a photo. Something that tells a simple human story. After I stopped letting myself get sidetracked scrolling through his photo's I decided to do what I meant to (actually research his inspirations and life.) But I did gleam from his photo's that he seems to have gone all over the world to take these, which is a small look into how much passion Haas had for photography.

It took little time for me to understand that Haas had the greatest childhood environment an artist could want, two artist parents of different vocations who inspire and encourage for their children to view art as important. His parent's also immediately enrolled Haas when they realized he was interested in pursuing art giving him an incredible foundation to base his future works off. Crazily enough Haas lived through WW2 and even worked in a labor camp (He was an Austrian) when they invaded. He also wasn't interested in photography until his fathers death, but quickly grew to love the medium. I soon after realized that somehow I had hit the mark on the first thoughts I had of Haas when I read this quote from him, "I never really wanted to be a photographer. It slowly grew out of the compromise of a boy who desired to combine two goals—explorer or painter. I wanted to travel, see and experience. What better profession could there be than the one of a photographer, almost a painter in a hurry, overwhelmed by too many constantly changing impressions? But all my inspirational influences came much more from all the arts than from photo magazines." Haas influence in photography came from painting, and he was more interested and seeing and capturing beautiful places. This resonates with me a lot. I love painting but I feel the same way Haas does, I want to travel and explore the beauty nature has for us before we lose it. I want to capture things that matter to me. I want to show what I love to the world in the best possible way I can. Even though I picked Haas without much interest I think me and him have a lot more in common than I expected.
